P5GC-VM P5GC-VM IDE Connector PIN 1 ASUS P5GC-VM 1-27 2. Floppy disk drive connector (34-1 pin FLOPPY) This connector is for the provided Floppy Disk Drive (FDD) signal cable. Insert one end of the cable to this connector, then connect the other end to the signal connector at the back of the floppy disk drive. Pin 5 on the connector is removed to prevent incorrect cable connection when using an FDD cable with a covered Pin 5. FLOPPY NOTE: Orient the red markings on the floppy ribbon cable to PIN 1. ® P5GC-VM PIN 1 P5GC-VM Floppy Disk Drive Connector 3. CPU and chassis fan connectors (4-pin CPU_FAN, 3-pin CHA_FAN) The fan connectors support cooling fans of 350mA~2000mA (24W max. ) or a total of 1A~3. 48A (41. 36W max. ) at +12V. Connect the fan cables to the fan connectors on the motherboard, making sure that the black wire of each cable matches the ground pin of the connector. Do not forget to connect the fan cables to the fan connectors. Insufficient air flow inside the system may damage the motherboard components. DO NOT place jumper caps on the fan connectors. Doing so will damage the motherboard! 6. Optical drive audio connector (4-pin CD) This connector is for the 4-pin audio cable that connects to the audio connector at the back of the optical drive. ATX power connectors (24-pin EATXPWR, 4-pin ATX12V) These connectors are for an ATX power supply. The plugs from the power supply are designed to fit these connectors in only one orientation. Save a copy of the original motherboard BIOS file to a bootable floppy disk in case you need to restore the BIOS in the future. Copy the original motherboard BIOS using the ASUS Update or AFUDOS utilities. 2. 1. 1 1. Creating a bootable floppy disk Choose one of the following methods to create a bootable floppy disk. DOS environment a. At the DOS prompt, type format A:/S then press <Enter>. Windows® XP environment a. Select Create an MS-DOS startup disk from the format options field, then click Start. Windows® 2000 environment To create a set of boot disks for Windows® 2000: a. From the Open field, type D:\bootdisk\makeboot a: assuming that D: is your optical drive. Copy the original or the latest motherboard BIOS file to the bootable floppy disk. 2. 1. 2 ASUS EZ Flash utility The ASUS EZ Flash feature allows you to update the BIOS without having to go through the long process of booting from a floppy disk and using a DOS-based utility. The EZ Flash utility is built-in the BIOS chip so it is accessible by pressing <Alt> + <F2> during the Power-On Self-Test (POST). Visit the ASUS website (www. asus. com) to download the latest BIOS file for the motherboard and rename the file as P5GVMX. ROM. Press <Alt> + <F2> during POST to display the following. EZFlash starting BIOS update Checking for floppy. . . 4. Insert the floppy disk that contains the BIOS file to the floppy disk drive. When the correct BIOS file is found, EZ Flash performs the BIOS update process and automatically reboots the system when done. EZFlash starting BIOS update Checking for floppy. . .
