At a minimum, the safety valve should be inspected every 6 months or 1500 operating hours, whichever comes first, for proper operation. Should the safety valve not meet the elements of the operational tests noted in this document, further investigation and service of the valve may be required. EXHAUST PORT PRESSURE SETTING 150 PSI ST-1TM VALVE ST-3TM VALVE DESCRIPTION The safety valve protects the air brake system against excessive air pressure build-up. [. . . ] INSTALLING Safety valve should be installed in same reservoir that compressor discharge line is connected to. If safety valve is installed horizontally, exhaust port should point down, stem of the valve should face rear of vehicle. SD-03-1901 1 DISASSEMBLY: ST-1TM ADJUSTABLE VALVE 1. Remove ball valve, spring and release pin from spring cage. ADJUSTING NUT SPRING CAGE BALL VALVE RELEASE PIN LOCK NUT SPRING ST-1TM SAFETY VALVE DISASSEMBLY: ST-3TM NON-ADJUSTABLE VALVE 1. Remove ball valve, spring and release pin from spring cage. BODY PIPE THREAD RELEASE PIN CLEANING AND INSPECTION Clean all parts in mineral spirits. All parts not considered serviceable should be replaced with genuine Bendix replacement parts. ASSEMBLY: ST-1TM ADJUSTABLE VALVE 1. Adjust for proper setting (see "Adjustment" section). SPRING CAGE SPRING BALL VALVE BODY PIPE THREAD ASSEMBLY: ST-3TM NON-ADJUSTABLE VALVE 1. Hold spring cage in soft jawed vise and tighten body securely. ST-3TM SAFETY VALVE TO RAISE PRESSURE SETTING 1. Tighten lock nut. To adjust, the safety valve must be connected to an air system with air pressure in excess of desired setting. It is important that an accurate gauge be used to check pressure settings while making adjustments. WARNING!PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH: When working on or around a vehicle, the following general precautions should be observed at all times. Park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brakes, and always block the wheels. Stop the engine and remove ignition key when working under or around the vehicle. When working in the engine compartment, the engine should be shut off and the ignition key should be removed. Where circumstances require that the engine be in operation, EXTREME CAUTION should be used to prevent personal injury resulting from contact with moving, rotating, leaking, heated or electrically charged components. Do not attempt to install, remove, disassemble or assemble a component until you have read and thoroughly understand the recommended procedures. Use only the proper tools and observe all precautions pertaining to use of those tools. TO LOWER PRESSURE SETTING 1.
