Note: The printer's default paper size setting is A4 or Letter, depending on the country of purchase. If you are printing on a different paper size than the default, you need to change the printer's Paper Size setting in the printer driver. Loading Paper 25 Loading optional 500-Sheet Lower Paper Cassette Unit Follow the steps below to load paper into the 500-Sheet Lower Paper Cassette Unit. Loading Paper 27 4 Connecting the Printer Plugging in the Printer Follow the steps below to connect your printer to an electrical outlet: 1. It is off when the N side of the power switch on the left side of the printer is pushed in. 2. Insert the power cord into the back of the printer and plug the other end into a properly grounded electrical outlet. 28 Connecting the Printer Connecting to the Computer Your printer comes with two standard interface connectors, parallel and USB. Parallel interface for PCs Follow the steps below to connect the printer to your computer through the parallel interface. Plug the cable connector securely into the printer's parallel interface connector. Then squeeze the wire clips together until they lock into place on both sides. If your cable has a ground wire, connect it to the ground connector located below the interface connector. ground connector 3. Plug the other end of the cable into the computer's parallel interface connector. If there is a ground wire at the computer end of the cable, connect it to the ground connector at the back of the computer. Connecting the Printer 29 Using a USB connection Follow the steps below to connect the printer to your computer through the USB interface. Note: Only Macintosh® and PC systems equipped with a USB connector and running Mac® OS 8. 1 (or later) or Microsoft® Windows® Me/98/2000 support the USB interface. Plug the appropriate end of the cable into the USB port on the back of the printer, as shown below. (The end that fits the printer has a different shape from the end that fits the computer. ) 2. Connect the other end of the cable to the computer's USB port. 30 Connecting the Printer 5 Installing and Using the Printer Driver The printer driver is provided on the "EPSON EPL-5800L Printer Software" CD-ROM shipped with your printer. It allows you to control your printer with Windows Me/98/95/2000, NT® 4. 0, or Mac OS 8. 1 and later. With it, not only can you make basic printer settings like paper size and orientation, but you also have access to a whole range of other options that will help you optimize the use of your printer. When you install the printer driver, the EPSON Status Monitor 3 utility is also automatically installed. This utility gives you the option to view printer information such as the remaining amount of toner, and can be set up to notify you of errors when they occur. Refer to the Reference Guide for more information on the utility. For Windows Users Your computer must meet the following requirements to use the Windows driver included with the printer: The computer must be running Microsoft Windows Me, 98, 95, 2000 or NT 4. 0 The computer must have 10 MB of free hard disk space Note: If your computer has been upgraded from Windows 95 or 98 to Windows Me, uninstall the current printer driver, then install or reinstall the Windows 98 printer driver. Make sure that the printer is off and that Windows is running. Installing and Using the Printer Driver 31 2. [. . . ] This means that the printer does not produce hazardous laser radiation. Since radiation emitted by the laser is completely confined within protective housings and external covers, the laser beam cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user operation. For United Kingdom users The EPL-5800L is a page printer which utilizes a semiconductor laser. There is no possibility of danger from the laser, provided that the printer is operated according to the instructions in the guides provided. w Warning: The use of controls, or the performance of procedures other than those specified in this guide may result in hazardous radiation exposure. This is a semiconductor laser.
