Manual abstract: user guide FAMILYSEARCH PERSONAL ANCESTRAL FILE 5.2

Detailed instructions for use are in the User's Guide.

[. . . ] Personal Ancestral File 5. 2--User's Guide Important: For version 5. 2, minimal changes were made to the help and Users Guide to correct errors and to explain new features. Because the changes are so minor, it is recommended that you not print the entire Users Guide for 5. 2 if you printed the previous version. The text for the Users Guide is identical to the information found in the online help, and the online help actually contains more information than the Users Guide. If you use the online help, you do not need to print the Users Guide, which is nearly 200 pages. 2002 by Intellectual Reserve, Inc. [. . . ] If you have enough hard disk space, store your multimedia files in one folder on your computer's disk drive. For example, if you store your . paf files in C:\My Data\Genealogy, store your multimedia files in C:\My Data\Genealogy\Multimedia. This gives you the following advantages: You always know where your multimedia files are. If you decide to include multimedia with a GEDCOM file, you can easily find and copy the multimedia files. You never have to swap compact discs when displaying or printing information with multimedia files. If you decide to include multimedia with a GEDCOM file, the GEDCOM file uses a relative path as the multimedia link. The program assumes that the folder is in the 91 - Personal Ancestral File 5. 2--User's Guide same drive and folder as the main file. In other words, the location of the multimedia file is relative to the location of the main file. If you store your multimedia files in another place, then Personal Ancestral File must use an absolute path as the multimedia link. An absolute path contains the drive letter and the name of every folder where the multimedia file is stored. When a GEDCOM file contains absolute paths as multimedia links, then the receiver will have to copy the multimedia files to exactly the same drive and folder where you stored them. If that person wishes to store the multimedia files elsewhere, then he or she will have to use Global Search and Replace to change the paths of the multimedia file names. Tip: If you started using multimedia, did not follow these guidelines, and would like to start using them, you will need to find all individuals in a . paf file with multimedia files, move the multimedia files to a new folder, and change the location where Personal Ancestral File expects to find them. See "Case Study: Finding all individuals with multimedia and moving all multimedia files to the same folder" (p. If you do not have enough hard disk space, store your multimedia files on a compact disc, a zip drive, or on some other type of storage device. You must insert that storage device when you use Personal Ancestral File, or the program will not be able to display or print the multimedia files. You will have fewer problems if you store all multimedia files on one storage device, such as on one compact disc or one zip drive. Sharing multimedia The . paf file does not store the multimedia file itself; it stores only the path where the file can be found. This fact has the following implications: When you make a backup copy of the . paf file, only the links to multimedia files will be included. When you import or export a GEDCOM file that includes multimedia, you must also give the individual a copy of the multimedia files. That individual must then copy the multimedia files onto a drive and folder that his or her computer can use. It is helpful if you tell him or her the drive and folder(s) where you store your multimedia files. If the receiver copies the files onto the same drive and folder, the multimedia will appear.
