You can use the zoom to change the captured area.

Press the Zoom/w/x button in A mode.
x Tele : enlarges the subject w Wide : enlarges the area captured by the camera The zoom bar indicates the current level of magnification.

When the digital zoom function is set to P (Off), you can take pictures at up to three times magnification using the optical zoom. When the digital zoom function is set to O (On), you can combine it with the optical zoom to enlarge the subject to a maximum magnification equivalent to 12 times.

Optical zoom Digital zoom range range
· You are recommended to use a tripod to prevent camera shake when taking pictures at a high magnification rate. · Pictures taken in the digital zoom range appear grainier than pictures taken in the optical zoom range.
Setting the Digital Zoom The digital zoom is set to O (On) in the default settings. To take pictures using only the optical zoom, set the digital zoom to P (Off).

Press the 3 button in A mode.
The [A Rec. Mode] menu appears.
Use the four-way controller (23) to select [Digital Zoom]. Press the shutter release button halfway.
The digital zoom function setting is saved and the camera returns to capture status.

You can adjust the overall brightness of the picture. Use this function to take pictures that are intentionally overexposed or underexposed.

Use the four-way controller (23) to select [EV Compensation]. Press the four-way controller (45).

You can change the EV setting. You can choose the EV setting in the range of 2. 0 EV to +2. 0 EV in 1/3 EV steps.
Press the 4 button.
The EV compensation value is saved and the camera returns to capture status. · If you use the EV compensation function frequently, you can save time by assigning it to the Green button. Displaying Shooting Information in Capture Mode
The LCD monitor display changes in the following sequence each time you press the 4 button: Normal Display, Histogram + Info, No Icons, Backlight Off. For details of each display mode, refer to "Monitor Indications" (p. 18).

Using the Histogram A histogram shows the brightness distribution of an image. The horizontal axis represents brightness (dark at the left and bright at the right) and the vertical axis represents the number of pixels. (Dark) Brightness (Bright) The shape of the histogram before and after shooting tells you Dark portions Bright portions whether the brightness and contrast are correct or not, and lets you decide if you need to use EV compensation or take the picture again.

Understanding Brightness If the brightness is correct, the graph peaks in the middle. If the image is too dark, the peak is on the left side, and if it is too bright, the peak is on the right side.

When the image is too dark, the part to the left is cut off (dark portions) and when the image is too bright, the part to the right is cut off (bright portions). Bright portions blink red on the LCD monitor and dark portions blink yellow.

Understanding Contrast The graph peaks gradually for images in which contrast is balanced.
