Don't use the toaster near or below curtains or other combustible materials and watch it while it's hot. 5 Put the plug into the power socket (switch the socket on, if it's switchable). 7 Press and release the d button to reduce the number of lights glowing ­ to lighten the toast. 8 Press and release the u button to increase the number of lights glowing ­ to darken the toast. 10 Put bread into the toasting slots (maximum thickness 25mm/1"). , It won't lock down unless the toaster is connected to the electricity supply. 12 The browning level lights will indicate the state of the toast: a) the rightmost of the glowing lights will flash, then go out b) the next glowing light will flash, then go out c) when the last light stops flashing and goes out, the toast will pop up, and the elements will turn off. 1 2 3 4 extra lift 13 After toasting, you may raise the bread carriage handle further, to make it easier to remove small items, like bagels and crumpets. The elements will turn off, and the lights will revert to the way they were before you pressed the bread carriage handle, ready to start again. 13 Leave the browning control at your favoured setting, insert the frozen bread, lower the bread carriage handle, then press the f button. 14 The light in the f button will glow, and the toasting time will be altered automatically to give the same degree of browning you get with unfrozen bread. caution don't try to defrost bread ­ you'll probably wreck the toaster a) toasting frozen bread changes ice to steam, which escapes via the toasting slots b) defrosting bread on a low setting changes ice to water, which drips into the toaster, over the electronics and maybe the elements, causing mayhem 15 Leave the browning control at your favoured setting, insert the frozen bread, lower the bread carriage handle, then press the m button. 16 The light in the m button will glow, the toast will be given a short burst of heat, then it'll pop up, and the lights will go out. 4 eject 5 frozen bread f reheating toast m hints and tips 18 When toasting more than one slice of bread, use slices of similar size, thickness and freshness. 19 Old (yesterday's) bread contains less moisture, so makes crisper toast.
